How to determine parenting time

One of the most difficult parts of going through a divorce in Florida can be determining parenting time. Shuffling schedules, making arrangements and communicating can be overwhelming, but having a plan set in place before the judge officially dissolves your marriage can make your co-parenting transition much smoother. We at The Law Offices of Philip J. Schipani not only help you divide your assets, we can also guide you through the process of determining your parenting time.

According to, judges in Florida are more focused on giving you parenting time with your child than they are in labeling visitation and custody. This means that, barring any evidence of abuse, you and your ex-spouse will be encouraged to share parenting responsibilities as equally as possible instead of fighting for sole custody or more visitation time.

While your child’s age and schedule will play a large role in the plan you develop, there are plenty of options available to find the perfect fit for your family. Some parents prefer to have children stay at one house during the week and the other on the weekends, while others switch off every three days. You may also find that more stability is necessary for your child and trades should occur only every two weeks.

Holidays present another challenge. While you may wish to split each holiday in half, you may find that taking the child for full holiday weekends works better for everyone’s schedules. For more information on how to develop your individual parenting plan, please visit our web page.
