How Do I Get an Order of Protection?
If you are a victim of violence or you fear being a victim of violence, we can help you obtain a court order called an order of protection, or a restraining order. These documents order your spouse or partner not to contact you or come near you.
In situations where the threat is imminent and serious, including fear of physical harm or fear for your life, we can file a motion for an injunction the same day and the court may hear the motion without the other party present. The court may:
- Reject the request upon a finding that there is insufficient evidence
- Reject the request but order a hearing within 14 days
- Grant the injunction and order a hearing within 14 days

What If Someone Gets a Protective Order Against Me?
If the court issues a protective order against you, you will lose contact with your children until the order is rescinded. If you are a police officer or own any weapons, you will have those weapons taken away. The court will prohibit you from having any direct or indirect contact with the victim, including by phone, email or regular mail. If you violate any of the terms of the protective order, you may face criminal charges that can have lasting consequences.
